3 Ways a Healthy Immune System Benefits Your Life

Picking up a minor sickness can make some people feel miserable. Major illnesses, of course, can cause even more suffering. People with stronger immune systems usually bounce back from illness sooner than those who have weak immune systems. If you don’t take care of your immune system, you should consider these three ways that a healthy immune system benefits your life.

1. You Get Sick Less When You Have a Healthy Immune System

This one may be pretty obvious but we must reiterate this important fact. A healthy immune system has the ability to eliminate most of the bacteria, parasites, bacteria and other pathogens that enter your body. For instance, when your body recognizes a virus, your immune system creates lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, to destroy the invader and keep you healthy.

Other white blood cells that work with the immune system include:

  • Monocytes that break down bacteria.
  • Neutrophils that attack fungi and bacteria.
  • Basophils that secrete histamine and other chemicals that help prevent illnesses.
  • Eosinophils that kill parasites and cancer cells.

Without these five types of white blood cells, your immune system wouldn’t know how to defend your body against illness. When you have a strong immune system, these white blood cells will work to keep you well. The healthier your immune system is, the less likely it is that you will get sick.

2. A Healthy Immune System Helps You Accomplish More

Getting sick makes it nearly impossible to concentrate on important tasks. A runny nose, sore throat and throbbing head certainly don’t help when you’re trying to read a book, play with your children or finish a project for work.

Feeling sick for a day or two shouldn’t make you feel unaccomplished. Frequent sickness, though, can cut into the time that you rely on to make life fulfilling. When you spend a lot of days feeling ill, you’re unlikely to make your dreams come true.

Keep your immune system in top shape so you can accomplish more and lead a rewarding life.

3. A Healthy Immune System Means You Can Travel More

Traveling exposes you to new viruses. When you pick up a cold virus in an airport, it could have come from Asia, Australia, South America or anywhere else in the world. Since your immune system hasn’t encountered the virus before, it might not know how to react. An extremely healthy immune system has a better chance of fighting back.

Having a great immune system can also help protect you from contaminated tap water. Tap water in other countries may contain parasites and chemicals that your body isn’t used to. The locals can drink it safely because their immune systems know how to keep them safe. Your inexperienced immune system will struggle to fight off foreign attacks. It helps to have a strong system that knows how to fight.

Healthy Tips: Keeping Your Immune System in Top Condition

Keeping your immune system healthy may require a few lifestyle changes. Once you feel the results, though, you will know that the changes have made a positive influence on your body. Some of the most effective ways to boost your immune system include:

  • Exercising regularly.
  • Getting enough sleep.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Avoiding tobacco.
  • Drinking in moderation, if at all.
  • Eating a well-balanced diet.
